Small specimens of the fish species Parakneria thysi undertake a dramatic journey during the rainy season in April–May.
They cling to the vertical rock walls of the Luvilombo Waterfall and swing their small bodies upward using their fins in an explosive movement.
Every year, thousands of fish make their way up the fifteen-meter-high waterfall. The arduous journey takes ten hours and is risky. If a fish is hit by too strong a jet of water, it may fall, especially if it is hanging upside down under a protruding rock ledge.
The study is published in Scientific Reports.
