Introduce a 16-year age limit for social media. At least that's what the European Parliament wants, according to a vote in Strasbourg on Wednesday.

So far, however, it is only a call for the European Commission to submit a formal proposal. The Parliament's call, which was passed by 483 votes in favour to 92 against, includes that young people under the age of 13 should be allowed to use social media, but only with parental permission.

I am very pleased. It is the first time that parliament, the elected representatives, have come together to set demands that we can then make against the (EU) Commission, but also against the tech giants, says Swedish EU parliamentarian Adnan Dibrani (S).

The final vote on the proposal was supported by S, MP, C, V, KD and L on the Swedish side, while SD voted against and M abstained.
