Starting from the 2028–29 season, the Nations League (NL) will be reduced from four to three divisions, with three groups in each division and six teams in each group. Each national team will play six matches, thus facing each opponent twice.
Starting with the 2030 World Cup qualifiers, the 36 teams from the A and B divisions in the NL will be drawn into three twelve-team groups.
There, all teams play six matches against different opponents. UEFA has not announced exactly which positions will be sufficient for direct qualification and playoff places for the championships.
The teams from the NL's C division, 18 or 19 in number, can also qualify for the championships, but then via playoff games.
A final announcement about the format with more details will come in September, UEFA said.
Corrected: A previous version provided incorrect information about the format change.
