During the men's European Championship in Germany, spectators will have VAR decisions explained on the big screen, announces the European Football Association (Uefa).
According to the head of Uefa's referee committee, Roberto Rosetti, an example of an explanation might be:
"Penalty due to handball. Germany's number nine touches the ball with their left hand, which is in an unnatural position above the shoulder and away from the body".
During the Women's World Championship 2023, all VAR decisions were explained by the speaker before play resumed, and this is the next step to make the decisions clear to supporters in the stadium.
According to Rosetti, the main referees will also verbally explain VAR decisions to the team captains. Other players or coaches who request an explanation or challenge the referee will be cautioned with a yellow card – a rule that resulted in two yellow cards in the men's Champions League final between Real Madrid and Dortmund recently.
The European Championship starts on Friday with the opening match Germany–Scotland.
