Criticism of new competition: "Risk that people will opt out"

The biathlete is doing as the skiing sport and is incorporating a World Cup competition around New Year's – all to attract more TV viewers. But not everyone is equally happy about the change. The risk is that people will start skipping competitions if the burden becomes too great, says Sebastian Samuelsson.

The weekend around New Year's 2026-27 and 2028-29 will feature World Championship competitions in Slovenian Pokljuka. However, there will not be more competition days, instead, competitions will be removed from the premieres.

We on the active committee have been negative for several reasons, says Sebastian Samuelsson.

One of the reasons is that the seasons start a week earlier, when the snow supply is lacking. Another is the sustainability aspect, that there will be more travel between competitions. More travel also creates more strain on the athletes.

We have already got increased strain through the new start order, which makes the loading time at the arena longer, says Samuelsson.

We really need to think carefully, we have a sport where everyone competes all the time. The risk is that people start skipping competitions if the strain becomes too great.

Not everyone is equally negative.

It's always a bit exciting when things are changed. We've had very similar programs for eternity, says Elvira Öberg.

Viktor Brandt also thinks it's better that the Christmas break, which will be just as long as it used to be, now starts earlier.

For me, it's more valuable than getting to be home for New Year's, he says and adds that he now gets more time to buy Christmas presents.

This year, I had to go out very early to make it in time.
