Shinawatra is convicted of having broken the country's ethical rules. The case is about her being considered to have jeopardized the country's national interests after she, according to critics, appeared submissive and flattering towards Cambodia's leader Hun Sen in a leaked phone call from mid-June.

The conversation was leaked at the same time as the long-standing tense border conflict flared up after a Cambodian soldier was killed in a violent incident in a disputed area in May. At the end of June, the countries fought for five days, which killed tens of people and forced over 260,000 to flee.

Shinawatra has defended the tone in the conversation as a negotiation technique, but the Constitutional Court convicts her of the actions "not preserving the nation's pride and putting personal interests before the country).

The Prime Minister was suspended from her duties on July 1 and since then, the first vice Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai has replaced her as acting Prime Minister, reports BBC. A new Prime Minister is now to be elected by the House of Representatives.

The term of office would actually have ended in May 2027.
