That the EU Commission will now present a number of new measures and sanction proposals regarding Israel's actions in Gaza was announced in Chairwoman Ursula von der Leyen's speech in Strasbourg on Wednesday.
A large part of the Swedish members are positive.
–It is very important that we now put increased pressure on both Hamas and Israel. One should not use children's hunger as part of the warfare, says Tomas Tobé (The Moderate Party).
–I think the Commission has realized that Israel is now actually committing war crimes and it is not possible to ignore it, says Evin Incir (S).
Both The Christian Democrats and The Sweden Democrats are however strongly critical. Charlie Weimers (The Sweden Democrats) hopes that the member states will say no to the proposals, while Alice Teodorescu Måwe (The Christian Democrats) calls it "morally wrong" and an attempt to "appease the increasingly large anti-Semitic crowd in Europe".
Alice Teodorescu Måwe is one of the members in the entire EU Parliament who most strongly supports the government in Israel.
–We would have acted exactly the same if we had been subjected to what Israel is subjected to daily. If one is subjected to terror and has a neighbor who wants to eradicate one and who has that as a stated goal, I hope that we have the courage to defend ourselves, she says at a Swedish press conference in Strasbourg.
