Water in Iran's capital Tehran will be rationed and a large part of the more than ten million residents will be forced to live with water taps turned off at night, the authorities have announced.

The year 2025 has been the driest in Tehran in more than a hundred years, and it is now having consequences for the residents.

"We are forced to shut off the water supply during certain evenings so that the reservoirs can be filled," said Energy Minister Abbas Ali Abadi, according to the pro-regime news agency Isna.

In addition, the water pressure is reduced, so that less water is used.

This will help us avoid wasting water, although it will cause inconvenience, says Abbas Ali Abadi.

On Friday, President Masoud Pezeshkian warned in a televised speech of even worse consequences if the drought continues - if it doesn't rain more this year, Tehran could be partially evacuated, he said, without going into details about how this could be implemented.

The largest dam that supplies the capital with water currently holds 14 million cubic meters of water, which would only be enough to cover the city's needs for five days, the state-run Iranian news agency Irna reported. A year ago, the dam held 86 million cubic meters of water.

Iran's second largest city, Mashhad, is also turning off the water at night, according to the city's mayor.
