The broad S&P 500 index rose 1.5 percent, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 0.8 percent and the tech-heavy Nasdaq composite index rose 2.3 percent.
Above all, it was the big technology companies that performed strongly. Among them was processor giant Nvidia, the world's most valuable company, which rose 5.8 percent.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, which makes chips for Nvidia, rose 3.1 percent after the company reported a 17 percent increase in sales last quarter. The Taiwanese company has been listed on the New York Stock Exchange since 1997.
On the other hand, health insurance companies fell. Humana fell 5.4 percent and Elevance Health lost 4.4 percent.
