The men's curling team arrived at the Olympics as one of Sweden's hottest hopes for gold. In Cortina, they were ice-cold. The chance to play for medals effectively disappeared with the 3–7 loss to Germany. "We haven't come up to par at all. In hindsight, we weren't close. It feels very heavy," said Niklas Edin.

With three rounds left in the regular season, Edin, Oskar Eriksson, Rasmus Wranå and Christoffer Sundgren cannot squeeze into the four nations playing in the semi-finals and medal matches.

So far, Team Edin – the reigning Olympic champions – has won only one of six matches, a run that has stunned the curling world.

Niklas Edin himself says the team lost steam after Sunday's loss to the USA - and that the high-profile row with Canada has had an impact.

“Taken a lot of energy”

There has been a lot of talk about what happened against Canada. Unfortunately, it has taken a lot of energy. I think it has taken away sleep from us. It also showed in the games.

"We tried to find answers, but there have been too many half-baked guesses, guesses that were not close enough. If we had to make some decisions again, maybe we would have done it differently," says Edin.

He is making his fifth consecutive Olympics in Italy as skip in teams with different lineups. Under Edin, Sweden has never finished lower than fourth, in their debut in Vancouver 2010. Since then, the awards have been bronze, silver and gold.

Edin's last Olympics?

2026 will probably be his last Olympics.

"It's hard to predict four years ahead. I've had a lot of injuries in recent years. Even if you want to continue, it may turn out that it's not sustainable," he said before the tournament.

It might be smart to see it as his last Olympics, an end goal. If there are more, see it as a bonus.

After the loss against Germany, Edin said:

Right now it feels like a long time until the next Olympics. But you shouldn't go shopping when you're hungriest. That's when you make quite a few bad decisions.

"Rebrand to the World Cup"

After the loss to the USA, the chance of reaching the semi-finals was slim. But it was still possible - by first beating Germany and then winning the remaining matches against Switzerland, Norway and the Czech Republic.

It ended against the German team of Marc Muskatewitz.

Team Edin will use the remaining round-robin matches at the Olympics to prepare for the World Championships in Ogden, Utah (March 27–April 4), and the hunt for an eighth World Championships gold.

We have to try to get back to the World Cup, put this behind us, train well and put in a good effort. We did too badly this time but we haven't suddenly become a bad team, says Edin.
