The EU is responding to the US's new tariffs by reintroducing the tariffs that have been dormant since the trade disputes during Donald Trump's first presidential term. This includes a range of goods such as motorcycles, orange juice, and bourbon, worth a total of 8 billion euros.
The goods may seem random, but are largely selected to affect production in areas controlled by Trump supporters, in the hope that their discontent will make the president more willing to negotiate.
At the same time, preparations are being made for an even more extensive second wave, worth up to 18 billion euros. In anticipation of this, a two-week consultation is now being launched, where all those affected will have the opportunity to comment on the goods that the EU Commission has listed on a 99-page list.
Here too, the products are selected to primarily target specifically Trump-friendly parts of the US.
