The Iran-backed Islamist Houthi movement in Yemen claimed earlier this week that it had imposed a naval blockade in the Red Sea, targeting Saudi Arabia.
During the night of Thursday, the movement said rocket and drone attacks were aimed at two Saudi tankers that had "violated the blockade."
Saudi state media reported that the attacked ship belongs to a Saudi company and that no one was injured in the attack. The ship was 70 nautical miles southwest of the Saudi coastal city of Al Shuqaiq.
US President Donald Trump threatened on Thursday to attack the Houthi movement and Iran if their attacks on ships in the Red Sea continue.
