The Taliban regime in Afghanistan has banned books written by women at the country's universities, reports BBC.

A number of books have been removed as part of a broader ban that also includes education on human rights and sexual harassment. In total, it involves 18 subjects that universities are no longer allowed to educate about because they are considered to be in conflict with "sharia laws and the principles of the (Taliban) system”.

Since the extremely religious Taliban regained power in the country, they have introduced increasingly strict laws and restrictions. As recently as this week, the fiber network was shut down in at least ten provinces in the country to "prevent immorality". Women and girls are particularly hard hit, with, among other things, very limited opportunities for education.

The Taliban themselves have stated that they respect women's rights based on their interpretation of Afghan culture and Islamic sharia law.
