We know that too many children today grow up and are brought up in criminal environments. This is not the best for the child. Therefore, a clarification of the legislation is required, says party leader and Education Minister Johan Pehrson to the newspaper.

A problem according to Pehrson is that society's interventions against children who are doing poorly or committing crimes are initiated too late.

Therefore, The Liberals want the law to be changed so that it becomes clear that parents' connection to serious organized crime can be grounds for taking the child into care.

It is already possible today to take children into care if their parents are criminals, writes SvD. But it is the risk of the children being harmed at home that governs, rather than the problems the parents have.

I see that there needs to be increased clarity to be able to take the children into care, says Pehrson.

The Green Party's justice and child rights spokesperson Ulrika Westerlund thinks that Pehrson's proposal is "at best unthoughtful".

"Children who are doing poorly should be protected and gang criminals should be punished, but you're completely missing the child rights perspective here. Children should not be used as a pawn in the debate", she says in a written comment to TT.
