The Syrian military said the operation in the Sheikh Maqsoud area of Aleppo has ended, state media reported. However, Kurdish forces say the fighting is not over. The reports come after days of clashes.

In recent days, the Syrian military has launched attacks against Kurdish forces in Kurdish-dominated areas of Aleppo. On Saturday, the military announced that the "security review" in the area was complete, but Kurdish groups denied that the fighting was over.

During the clashes, around 155,000 people have been forced to flee the areas of Sheikh Maqsoud and Achrafieh because of the violence, according to Aleppo Governor Azzam al-Gharib.

Kurdish forces said in a statement that the government had "spread claims that it had taken control of 90 percent of the Sheikh Maqsoud area. We categorically confirm that these claims are false and misleading."

Since the fighting began on Tuesday, at least 21 civilians have been killed, according to reports from both sides.
