Syria's interim president Ahmed al-Sharaa announced on Sunday that a committee of seven people has been convened to draft a proposal for a new constitution during a transitional period.
The decision is part of Syria's transformation since leader Bashar al-Assad and his regime were toppled in December.
In a statement from the presidential office in Damascus, al-Sharaa announced that the committee will consist of experts, including one woman, with the goal of creating a constitution that regulates how a transition to free elections and democracy will take place.
The interim president has previously stated that elections can be held in about five years, and he did not mention a timeframe for drafting a temporary constitution.
