Kurdish forces in the Aleppo region say they are withdrawing eastward from the Deir Hafer stronghold, where the Syrian military is threatening attacks. Syria's interim president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, is trying to appease the Kurds with a promise to make Kurdish an official language.

The conflict between Syria's military and Kurdish armed groups entered a new phase late Friday, when Kurdish leaders said they would heed mediators' demands for troop movements eastward to the other side of the Euphrates River.

The Syrian army simultaneously issued warnings of upcoming attacks on targets in Deir Hafer, east of Aleppo, from where "terrorist attacks" are coming, according to Damascus.

President al-Sharaa also wants to appease the Kurds. In addition to language rights, there were promises of increased rights for Syria's minorities.
