Autumn is the last chance to apply for an adjustment with the Swedish Tax Agency if you think you will pay too much tax and do not want to wait for your tax refund. The most common reason is mortgage interest deductions.

However, very few people ask their main payer, such as their employer, to deduct less tax than the amount shown in their tax table, says Johan Schauman, a tax return expert at the Swedish Tax Agency.

"You should know that only a small proportion of the population does this - fewer than 100,000 people, which is a bit surprising considering that almost six and a half million people get money back," he tells TT.

No changes

Historically, the Swedish Tax Agency has not seen any major changes. Tougher economic times, such as when interest rates have risen, have not led more people to choose to adjust their tax deductions.

We believe this is because many people don't even think about the fact that this option exists. Perhaps it's because a very large proportion of people like getting a few thousand kronor in the spring before the holidays.

For those who do choose to adjust their tax deductions, however, there are a number of pitfalls to avoid. First and foremost, they need to submit complete information and make sure their calculations are correct, Johan Schauman points out.

If the adjustment is to apply for all of 2027, the application deadline is November 8.

Make an estimate

But it could also be that you are paying too little tax. One example is the municipal property fee that many homeowners have to pay.

It is not deducted from any income, but you have to pay it yourself. Another example is if you have sold shares at a profit; even a loss can have an impact, Johan Schauman points out.

The Swedish Tax Agency advises people to review their tax returns from previous years to avoid forgetting anything.

But many people have quite a lot of information in their tax returns, so applying for an adjustment is not that complicated.
