Swedish Players Confident in Winning European Championship Gold

Sweden does not belong to the biggest favorites before the European Championship in football. The blue and yellow players do not care about that. I think everyone in Sweden hopes for a European Championship gold. And of course we believe in ourselves, says midfielder Filippa Angeldahl.

Okay, some of the Swedish players are a bit more cautious. Linda Sembrant, for example, says she has no idea who will win. And Amanda Ilestedt does not want to say the words European Championship gold in her mouth for "not jinxing".

But otherwise, the Swedish players answer lightning-fast and in unison to the question of who will win the football European Championship.

It's not a jinx to say what you think. And I think Sweden, says midfielder veteran Kosovare Asllani.

"The bridesmaid" Sweden

If you look at the pre-tips, maybe more people are talking about Germany, Spain, England, and France. But Sweden usually goes far in the championships and that's the plan this time too.

Looking at our previous championships, we've always been there. But we've never made it all the way. And that's something we all believe in. Believing in yourself is very important in a championship, says Filippa Angeldahl.

The almost unanimous gold talk sounds almost rehearsed.

Do you talk internally about taking on the favorite role? With the leadership or the national team coach?

No, we haven't gone through that. So we'll see if I get crap after this, says Angeldahl.

It's possible to see it as that Sweden is a team that always succeeds in championships. Another perspective is that it's a nation that never wins.

I saw a funny thing that was quite telling of how it's been for us in the championships. That Sweden is always the bridesmaid but never the bride. It's like we go to the final but don't make it all the way, says Kosovare Asllani.

Want to raise self-confidence

She chooses the more favorable approach anyway.

We are a championship team. I think we rise when it matters most. We have a good mix of experience and new energy. Then it's about the last few percent where I think we can raise ourselves self-confidence-wise. To really believe in it. Because no matter how much quality you have, self-confidence can be crucial in championships.

Maybe the younger players can contribute to that. Right-back Hanna Lundkvist, 22, is fully focused on Sweden going all the way in Switzerland.

That's what I'm set on – that we're going to go there and win. Thinking anything else would be completely wrong. And I really think we can do it, says Lundkvist.

Sweden starts the European Championship against Denmark on Friday.
