Researchers have noticed a slow change in attitude among Swedes regarding the celebration of the National Day. In the latest measurement, as many as 42 percent of Swedes celebrated the National Day, compared to 31 percent in 2017 and 25 percent in 2011.
"At the same time, we must remember that the majority still does not celebrate June 6, even though it has been a public holiday since 2005," says Daniel Jansson, research communicator at the SOM Institute at the University of Gothenburg in a press release.
Generally, there are more National Day celebrators among those who stand to the right in politics – Center Party members, liberals, moderates and Christian Democrats – compared to those who stand to the left.
The National Day is most popular among foreign-born individuals – it is the group with the highest proportion of celebrators. According to researchers, this may to some extent be due to the fact that new citizens are in some cases invited to municipally organized citizenship ceremonies on June 6.
