The Ministry for Foreign Affairs is aware of her difficult situation, but says in a comment to Kulturnytt that the consular support to a naturalized Swedish citizen is severely limited and only provided in exceptional cases.
The Swedish-Iranian filmmaker Maryam Moghaddam and her husband were conditionally sentenced to 26 months in prison each in Iran, and have also been fined and had their film equipment confiscated.
She and her husband Behtash Sanaeeha have written and directed the comedy "A Little Piece of Cake" which is about a 70-year-old Iranian widow. The film shows the woman at home, without a veil, and portrays her loneliness and longing for love. With this, the couple is considered to have made themselves guilty of "propaganda against the system, spreading false information and creating anxiety among the public".
In September 2024, the distributor Triart Film announced that Moghaddam had her Swedish passport confiscated by Iranian authorities in connection with the film's Swedish cinema premiere.
