The government wants to introduce a ceiling on social assistance. Some of the proposals would allow social assistance to be reduced for large families or for people without a residence permit. The government says it wants to use this to encourage parents to look for work, but critics believe reduced support could have an impact on children.

In a comment to TT about the Legislative Council's statement, Minister of Social Insurance Anna Tenje (M) writes that the government is "confident in our assessment" that the benefit ceiling can be reconciled with the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The Convention became Swedish law in 2020 and means that laws and regulations must take into account the best interests of children.

Tenje adds that the benefit ceiling is in the best interests of children.
