The Royal Court announces that a state of mourning has been declared, starting on August 30 and continuing until the day before the funeral. This means that certain planned events for the Royal Family will be cancelled.
"I wish my dear godson Haakon, who now succeeds his father as King of Norway, all happiness and success in his future work for our brotherly country," the king writes.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson writes on X that King Harald's deeds will be remembered with warmth and respect.
"For many decades, he was a safe, respected and unifying force in both Norway and the Nordic countries," writes Kristersson.
The Government Offices will fly flags at half-mast during the day.
Social Democrats party leader Magdalena Andersson tells TT that her thoughts go out to Queen Sonja and the entire family.
He has been with Norway in some of the finest and best moments, but also in some of the absolute most difficult ones, she says.
