Sweden's opening meeting with Finland in Brno, Czech Republic, showed that the fight will likely be between the Nordic dominants.
The opening match ended 3–3.
Tonight's match with Poland was, as expected, a one-sided story – and an equally expected Swedish goal orgy. Already after the first period, Sweden had scored eight goals. When it was all over, Sweden had scored 13 more.
Pixbo's Mira Markström scored four of the goals and assisted on two more. Clubmates Ellen Lundin and Emma Stenberg both scored three goals, as did Täby's Hanna Nordstrand.
The group stage ends against Slovakia on Monday evening. The national team then travels to Ostrava where the World Cup will be decided from the quarter-finals onwards.
The last time Sweden's women didn't win the World Cup gold medal was in 2005. Then Switzerland won the final against Finland and Sweden had to settle for bronze.
