Many Swedish farmers buy fertilizer from Norway, where production is strongly linked to natural gas.

Energy prices are fundamental to the economy and, by extension, also to food prices, says Palle Borgström, chairman of the Swedish Farmers' Association.

The price of natural gas has risen from around 30 euros per megawatt-hour at the beginning of the week to around 50 euros. Fertilizer is crucial to supplying the world's growing population, Borgström continues.

Commercial fertilizer is also very important to milk production.
