The decision to develop a cultural canon was included in the Tidö Agreement between M, KD, L and SD after the 2022 election. Previously, similar projects have been carried out in, among other places, Denmark and the Netherlands to highlight the common cultural heritage, but the plans are very contentious.
The idea of a state-developed list of important cultural works has, among other things, been dismissed by the Swedish Academy. The Social Democrats have accused the committee behind the canon work of not taking the perspectives of minorities to a sufficient degree.
The work has been going on for almost two years and has been led by the historian Lars Trägårdh, who with the help of an expert group in each area has developed the current works.
A Swedish canon is expected to contain a total of 100 works distributed in two broad categories; arts such as literature, form, music, film and performing arts as well as society with a focus on religion, law and justice, economy and history that have put a "lasting mark on Swedish society".
Only works that are at least 50 years old can be considered.
