The Swedish Golf Federation's annual meeting decision on maximum limits regarding the number of members for a golf club was reported to the Competition Authority. Now the authority has chosen to investigate the decision.

In the beginning of April, an overwhelming majority at the golf association's annual meeting decided that each individual golf club is allowed to have restrictions on so-called golf IDs, i.e. members.

The decision is based on limiting the number of members in what is commonly referred to as mailbox or volume clubs.

Around 60,000 Swedish golfers may need to look for a new golf club after the decision – where not all parties were satisfied.

Already before the annual meeting, five parties affected by the decision had submitted a complaint to the Competition Authority.

A complaint that has now led to the authority proceeding with the case, reports Dagens Nyheter.

The Competition Authority writes on its website that the case has been prioritized since it is a "question of suspected market sharing/capacity limitation on a consumer-close market, which may constitute a breach of the Competition Act's prohibition on competition-restricting cooperation between companies".

The golf association's annual meeting decision comes into effect on July 1, 2025, but those who are members of clubs that exceed the ceiling will be allowed to stay until January 1, 2026.
