"We see how important Swedish film is for cinemas in smaller towns, and how they are hit extra hard when the supply of Swedish films is limited," says Anna Croneman, CEO of the Swedish Film Institute, in a press release.
Croneman emphasizes, however, that it is not demand that is the problem. Interest in film is high, and young people are the ones who go to the cinema most often, she says.
"We need more Swedish stories, but the number of Swedish feature films that the Swedish Film Institute can support risks continuing to decrease every year."
The statistics also indicate that the number of cinema admissions for Swedish films internationally increased during the year.
