Injured Olympic Champion Walter Wallberg Secures Milan-Cortina Spot

Despite not skiing yet, injured Walter Wallberg is one of the first Swedes to get a ticket to the Olympic Games in Milan and Cortina in nine months. I will be at my best to defend the gold, says the 25-year-old.

The mogul skier, who took one of Sweden's eight Olympic gold medals in Beijing in February 2022, got the green light on Wednesday to head to the Winter Games in Italy, in connection with the Swedish Olympic Committee's (SOK) camp in Chania on Crete.

A message that creates calm for Walter Wallberg. He missed both the freestyle World Championship in Switzerland and several World Cup competitions this winter due to injury problems and a torn tendon in one shoulder. His last competition was in December last year.

My shoulder is doing well. It's going according to plan, or much better than plan. It's very nice. So I'll just try to stick to the plan that exists and not try to force anything, he says to TT.

The 25-year-old is not worried about missing the Olympic Games in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo.

On skis in July

No, there's a clear plan already now. I'll hopefully start skiing in late July.

With the selection now, I can pick and choose which competitions I'll ski before the Olympic Games. From when I start skiing, I have half a year. It feels safe anyway.

Wallberg, the reigning Olympic champion in single mogul, will also compete in the new Olympic event parallel mogul in Italy.

It's going to be incredibly fun with double events during the Olympic Games. We've only had one before, he says.

Hopefully, we'll make it to the final together (with Filip Gravenfors). Then it's the one who comes out alive who takes the gold.

Tickets to more gold hopes

Gold hopes like Sara Hector, alpine skiing, Elvira Öberg, biathlete, and cross-country skiers Ebba Andersson, Frida Karlsson, and Jonna Sundling also got Olympic tickets on the Greek island.

They'll be joined by, among others, the curling teams Hasselborg and Edin.

I think I've had ten weeks in the area last year. I'm feeling very, very good there. It's going to be fun, says Frida Karlsson at SOK's press conference.

At the same time, injured cross-country skiing star Sandra Näslund, who took another of Sweden's Olympic gold medals in Beijing, is missing.

The team will be filled with more names up until the Olympic Games, which open on February 6.
