Roland Persson has made a name for himself with his large-scale installations featuring lifelike silicone sculptures. His studio is in Sickla, Stockholm.
"By politically confronting the serious and deeply entangled world situation, Persson, through his unique poetry, transforms the objects into something that carries ambiguity," says jury chair Mami Kataoka, director of the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo, in her justification.
"Wow, I think... I have a lot of thoughts, but I feel very honored," Persson told Finnish Yle when the award was presented in Helsinki on February 10.
The Ars Fennica Prize is awarded every two years to a Nordic or Baltic artist.
