According to Mitti, it is a 2.5-hectare area in Riksten that the then F18 air wing used for firefighting training until 1986. The firefighting foam used contained PFAS chemicals; their presence was later discovered and led to the closure of the Tullinge waterworks in 2011.
The Swedish Armed Forces wrote in a press release that they want to install a waterproofing membrane on the contaminated area to protect groundwater. The membrane is estimated to have a lifespan of 50–100 years.
"We are working intensively to investigate and implement appropriate measures at the locations where we have had operations that have caused pollution," says Jonathan Bannister, the Swedish Armed Forces' project manager.
