The levels of the eternal chemical PFAS in Halmstad's drinking water have long been high and must be reduced to meet the new limit value that will apply from and including 1 January 2026.

The Defence has previously acknowledged that old emissions from their fire training sites have affected the levels of PFAS substances in the drinking water. The purification work at Byaledet's waterworks, a facility being rebuilt to install ion exchangers for PFAS purification, is estimated to cost over 20 million kronor. How large the compensation from the Defence Forces will be is unclear and is still being discussed.

PFAS is a collective name for a large group of substances that repel fat, dirt and water. They are used in a number of products, such as frying pans, clothing, ski wax, food packaging and fire extinguishing foam. They are often called eternal chemicals because they are not broken down in nature.
