Swedes in Their 20s Consider AI for Investment Advice, Survey Finds

One of three Swedes in their twenties can imagine making investment decisions based on answers from AI, shows a survey from the Financial Supervisory Authority. But how good is the advice? We asked Chat GPT how we best invest 50,000 kronor.

Almost half of the money in investment companies, 30 percent in Swedish quality companies, 20 percent in dividend shares and the last thousand kronor in the broad category of growth/defense/tech. This is at least what the free version of Chat GPT thinks we should invest 50,000 kronor when we ask a direct question about which shares we should buy for that money.

Criminally not to buy

Chat GPT is clear in its response that we should spread the risks in many different holdings. Among the shares, Saab is highlighted as one of the Stockholm Stock Exchange's most buyable shares. It is also included in the last category "Growth/defense/tech". The first argument for Saab being a buyable share was that a user on Reddit wrote that the share is "criminally not to buy" and "Completely ridiculous buying opportunity".

In a final paragraph, it is mentioned that "experts warn of risks such as political instability and overvaluation" after the share has risen 320 percent in the last three years. It does not specify what kind of political instability it is warning about.

Half a year old tips

Aside from Saab, the steel company SSAB is mentioned as a "simple but strong candidate right now". The advice cites quotes from a stock analysis that Handelsbanken released earlier the same week.

In its summary, the AI service freely mixes advice from banks, individual asset managers and investors, and in some cases anonymous users on social media platforms. It is in several cases difficult to determine how fresh the advice is. Most of the advice is from the last month, but in some cases it is almost half a year old without it being clear.

The Financial Supervisory Authority warns against blindly relying on AI services when you want investment advice. Among other things, the risk is highlighted that the information is outdated and not adapted to the user's situation. There is also a lack of supervision from authorities such as the Financial Supervisory Authority.

But as part of the information gathering among many, I would say that AI can serve a good role, says the Financial Supervisory Authority's consumer protection economist Moa Langemark.

The direct questions were "Which share is most buyable on the Stockholm Stock Exchange?" and "How should I invest 50,000 kronor in shares?". We asked the questions to the free version of OpenAI's Chat GPT.
