Far too much food still ends up in the garbage in Sweden. New statistics from the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency show that the amounts are at the same level as in 2020.

In total, at the store and consumer level, we had 880,000 tons of food waste last year.

Households account for the largest share, 70 percent. Per person, we threw away 16 kilos of food that could have been eaten and 45 kilos of other food waste – and that doesn't include what gets poured down the drain.

Food waste from shops and wholesalers mainly consists of food that could have been sold, but instead becomes food waste. Restaurants and public catering also receive food waste that consists to some extent of peels, cleaning and preparation residues and is not considered food waste, just like in households.

Corrected: In a previous version there was an incorrect figure for the total amount of food waste.
