Sweden's national debt increased in 2025, but a stronger Swedish krona meant the cost of that debt fell, the Swedish National Debt Office notes.

The Swedish national debt increased by SEK 93 billion last year to a total of SEK 1,244 billion at the end of the year. This is the second year in a row that the government has run a deficit.

At the same time, the cost of the central government debt decreased to SEK 13 billion, largely due to currency effects. The cost of the central government debt corresponded to 0.2 percent of GDP.

Correction: A previous version gave an incorrect figure for how much the national debt increased.
