The increase, for the third year in a row, is due to fewer moose being shot, says Fredrik Widemo, a senior lecturer at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), who produces the annual estimate.

Hunters simply want more moose, so they don't shoot as many as before.

Last year, almost one in five moose was shot. This meant that 255,000 moose survived the hunt, compared with around 200,000 in 2023.

Several years of decline in the moose population led to it being classified as near threatened on the Red List last year. The listing is valid for five years.

If this trend continues, I would be surprised if it is red-listed in the next round, says Widemo.
