The Swedish tech company Airon plans to build the largest AI facility in Sweden, with the help of technology from AI giant Nvidia. We want to meet the public and business demand for AI solutions, says CEO Robert Lidberg.

The 20,000 square meter facility will have a capacity of 20 megawatts. In addition, Airon is expanding the already existing facility in Lidköping. The bill is estimated to land at five billion kronor.

Seen in terms of computing power, we will be the single largest AI factory in Sweden, says Lidberg.

The business model is based on renting out computing power, i.e. technical capacity for developing AI, unlike traditional data centers that rent out space and electricity.

We ourselves do not refine any product, but build and own the infrastructure itself and provide it as a service. We rent out the finished computing power. That's the difference from a traditional data center, says Lidberg.

Large market in the USA

Among the suppliers of hardware is the American chip manufacturer Nvidia.

They are a partner to us. They are leading the development of the GPU chip that is crucial for our operations.

He sees great opportunities in the industry. The rapid development pace in AI means that future demand will be enormous.

We have a large market in the USA and we see that Europe is starting to catch up. We are really just in the beginning of AI development. Seen from the needs of the market, our investment of five billion kronor is actually quite small.

"Sweden the right place"

And in Sweden, there are several favorable factors that come into play.

Partly because we are a skilled engineering country. We have renewable energy in abundance if you build where it exists. We have a cold climate that makes it very advantageous to cool, which we need. And the three factors together create really good conditions.

If we can export computing power in quantities, it would be fantastic and I think Sweden and the Nordic countries are precisely the right place for that, says Robert Lidberg.

The first sod is expected to be taken next year. The facility will be built out in stages and be completed in a couple of years, according to Airon.
