Joakim Abrahamsson, the former captain of Sweden's national team, will take over the Finnish cross-country skiing team.

The 55-year-old will be Finland's national team captain after this season, when Teemu Pasanen steps aside.

The Finnish national team is already at a high level. But Finland can do better at developing its skiers. We should create better conditions for promising juniors to step into the world elite, Abrahamsson tells Swedish Yle.

Abrahamsson was the Swedish national cross-country skiing captain between 2009 and 2012, during a successful blue-and-yellow period that yielded 15 championship medals and numerous podium finishes in the World Cup.

Together with Magnus Ingesson, he was named Leader of the Year at the 2011 Sports Awards after Sweden's successes at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics.
