The Government summoned Israel's ambassador to the Ministry for Foreign Affairs on Tuesday morning due to the severe situation in Gaza. We are appalled by the development in Gaza, says Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard (The Moderate Party).

The summoning should be seen as a "powerful marker", according to the Foreign Minister.

It was done to repeat and emphasize the government's demands on the Israeli government to immediately ensure safe and unimpeded humanitarian access to Gaza, writes the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in a press release.

Blocking food and other aid to civilians is seen by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs as "indefensible".

We are deeply concerned that humanitarian aid has not been allowed into Gaza for over two months, and that what has come in is absolutely not enough, says Maria Malmer Stenergard.

No comment from Israel

The Ministry for Foreign Affairs further states that Israel's right to defend itself was underscored at the meeting – but that the way the war is being waged is unacceptable.

How come you're sharpening your tone now?

We are horrified by the developments in Gaza. It hurts to see pictures of children starving and dying, and we must, alone and together with others, put pressure on Israel to immediately gain humanitarian access, save lives and alleviate suffering, says Malmer Stenergard.

She does not want to comment on whether what is happening in Gaza should be classified as genocide.

I and previous governments have had the tradition of not commenting, but rather leaving it to international courts.

The ambassador took another route out and left no comments to waiting journalists.

The Foreign Minister does not want to comment on how Sweden's message was received by the ambassador or what he replied.

But the meeting should be seen as a way to put pressure on Israel.

And I believe that if other countries do the same, the Israeli government will have to listen.

"Hamas is responsible"

Hamas' responsibility for the situation weighs heavily, according to the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, and the demand on the terrorist organization is that hostages must be released, unconditionally and immediately.

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (The Moderate Party) stated on Monday that the EU should act against Israel with sanction measures, listings of extremist ministers and settlers, and diplomatic pressure.

In addition, the EU Commission is currently reviewing the association agreement between Europe and Israel to assess whether Israel is living up to the provisions on human rights.
