Russia's actions now indicate increased risk-taking, not least towards the surrounding area and the countries that support Ukraine the most, says Ulf Kristersson.
He invited the party leaders to a meeting on the security situation on Monday after the recent violations of airspace around Europe.
Prior to the meeting, Kristersson announced that Sweden will support Denmark with military anti-drone capabilities to increase security during this week's EU summits.
Primarily to protect the Copenhagen area from unwanted drone attacks for a while, says the Prime Minister.
Risk of cancellation
The unit is being sent after Denmark requested it, according to Ulf Kristersson. It involves capabilities that are quite new in Sweden. The system was showcased for the first time as recently as this summer on Gotland during Almedalsveckan. After that, the unit has been with the Swedish Gripen planes in Poland, where they contributed to protecting the deliveries of military equipment to Ukraine.
According to Kristersson, the Danish government was worried about having to cancel the summits after the drone incidents.
That Denmark took the risk of this being affected or having to be cancelled quite seriously was fairly obvious, he says.
If we in this security situation would have to cancel or jeopardize major European meetings, it would in itself be a serious signal.
Also, among other things, France is lending out anti-drone capabilities, a unit of 35 people and a helicopter. How large a resource Sweden is sending is unknown, but according to a defense expert, it may involve "a handful" of soldiers.
Drone defense
Europe is on its toes after several incidents recently. At the beginning of September, a large number of Russian drones swept into Poland. Just over a week later, three Russian fighter jets violated Estonia's airspace for twelve minutes. After that, Denmark has been hit by a series of drone incidents at airports and near military facilities. However, it is not confirmed that Russia is behind it.
Prior to the meeting, the Social Democrats demanded that Sweden should take part in the EU's new cooperation on a "drone defense". Such discussions are ongoing, according to Kristersson.
Right now, it was the frontline states. There are discussions about all of Europe having a more joint drone defense, he says.
