A new law will come into effect on September 1, which will mean that more foreigners convicted of crimes will also be sentenced to deportation after serving their sentences. For this law to lead to more deportations actually being carried out, an investigator will now be appointed to examine whether foreigners convicted of crimes should be eligible for earlier conditional release.

The aim of the inquiry is to serve a shorter period in prison in exchange for people returning home voluntarily, says Migration Minister Johan Forssell (M).

It is now common for those sentenced to deportation not to be accepted by their home country unless they return voluntarily.

The inquiry is due to present its proposals on March 1 next year.
