The Prison and Probation Service will establish women's places with security class 1 at the institutions Tidaholm and Saltvik, the agency writes in a press release.

It is the first time that the Prison and Probation Service creates women's places in the highest security class.

”The development in recent years with women being sentenced to increasingly longer sentences for serious crime makes it necessary for us to take this measure”, says Susanne Wedin, director for prison, custody and probation, in a press release.

The goal is that Tidaholm prison will have 24 women's places from the turn of the year, while Saltvik in Härnösand will have 40 women's places in use by 2028.

Today, there are over 500 places for women, but they are distributed in security classes 2 and 3.

”At present, we have about 15 inmates who should be placed in class 1”, says Thomas Wihrén, expert in the section for capacity and analysis.
