The exercise, which begins on October 13 in Italy, is held annually and aims to “ensure that NATO’s nuclear deterrent remains credible and effective.” Allied fighter jets capable of carrying nuclear weapons are taking part, but no live nuclear weapons are used in the exercise.
"The purpose of nuclear weapons capability is ultimately to preserve peace, prevent blackmail and deter aggression. By participating in Steadfast Noon, Sweden contributes to the security of the entire alliance," says Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M) in a comment.
Sweden is participating with Gripen aircraft and personnel from the Swedish Armed Forces.
