The new law will come into effect in 2027. To be entitled to residence-based social security benefits, immigrants must have lived legally in Sweden for five years within a 15-year period.

However, it should be possible to qualify more quickly. This requires working for six months or 12 consecutive months, at a certain income level.

Today, people who move to Sweden can receive residence-based benefits directly. The benefits covered include basic parental benefit, child benefit, elderly support, housing allowance and housing supplement.

V and MP were against the qualification requirements. S also says no to the requirements, except that one must reside legally in Sweden to be entitled to residence-based benefits.
