Sweden's team Anna Hasselborg began the European Curling Championships in Lohja, Finland, with a loss, with Switzerland winning Saturday's premiere 10–5.

A Swiss 5–0 in the seventh round, with the score tied at 4–4, decided the match.

Switzerland has dominated women's curling in recent years, but it has been a different team than the one currently playing in the European Championships. The Alpine nation has sent Team Corrie Hürlimann to the European Championships in Finland and not Team Silvana Tirinzoni, who has won two straight European Championships gold medals and has also won the World Championships four times since 2019.

Team Hürlimann is actually ranked third in Switzerland, but won the European Championship qualifiers.

For Sweden, the silver medalists at the European Championships last year, the tournament is an important preparation for the Olympics in February. All countries in the European Championships, with the exception of Switzerland (Team Tirinzoni playing at the Olympics), have sent their Olympic teams to the European Championships, writes Dagens Nyheter .

Ten countries are competing for the play-off places in the European Championship. Everyone meets everyone else and the top four advance to the semi-finals. Sweden plays its next match later on Saturday, against Scotland at 6:30 p.m.
