For the second time in a row, Sweden has lost out in the battle to host the Women's European Championship. Germany will instead host the championship in 2029.

The decision followed a vote in the European Football Association (Uefa) executive committee on Wednesday afternoon.

UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin announced Germany as the host of the championship, which will be held in the summer of three and a half years from now. The country hosted the men's European Championship finals in football as recently as the summer of 2024.

Sweden's entry, together with Denmark, was thus rejected for the second time in a row. Together with Finland and Norway, the countries also sought the women's European Championship finals in 2025. That championship was awarded to Switzerland and was decided this summer.

"We hoped that it would be our turn to host the European Championship this time. We have developed our application and learned from the previous application process. We have had a very strong and competitive bid," says the Swedish Football Association's chairman Simon Åström to the association's website.

Poland was also a candidate to host the 2029 European Championship finals, but was rejected like Sweden and Denmark.

The last time Sweden hosted a senior football championship was the Women's European Championship in 2013.
