Reigning champions Sweden followed up their gold medal at the 2022 Beijing Olympics with a silver. It is the first Olympic medal for Italy's women's biathlon team.

It is also the seventh consecutive championship relay medal for the Swedish women.

Linn Gestblom, Anna Magnusson, Elvira Öberg and Hanna Öberg were the team that did it this time.

"I'm very happy that we're winning this medal. It feels great that we also get to be with the guys and have a medal," Hanna Öberg tells HBO Max, referring to Martin Ponsiluoma's sprint gold and the men's relay bronze.

Steady start

Gestblom was first out and needed only two extra shots.

"I'm really happy with my leg and think I'm doing well. Sure, I took an extra shot in each series, but it's fully acceptable and I closed it up, so I'm very happy with that," Gestblom says after her leg.

It was tougher for Anna Magnusson. In the first shooting she had to ski a penalty loop. In the standing shoot, however, she shot clean and handed over to Elvira Öberg in sixth place.

"Linn probably gave me a little too good a starting position because it's something different to shoot on range one. I was a bit shaky there and unfortunately it was one penalty loop. I'm not so happy about that, of course, but I still think I held it together afterwards," Magnusson tells TV4.

“Just to work”

Elvira Öberg looked bombproof, shot clean in both her shooting stages, and handed over to older sister Hanna Öberg in second place. But appearances can be deceiving.

"I really have to battle with the standing shoot; it shakes so terribly from about the second shot, so it takes a while."

"I felt I had to put these in because if I start taking spare shots and stay here, it will only start shaking even more. So I just had to work them in," Elvira Öberg says.

Simon dominant

Hanna Öberg only needed two extra shots and produced a strong final leg, but nothing could be done about the superb Julia Simon and the French team. Simon shot clean in 20 and 18 seconds, respectively, and the French star - who was convicted last fall of stealing a teammate's credit card and making purchases worth tens of thousands of kronor - took her third gold at these Olympics.

In addition to a good performance, the Swedish team also has its blue and yellow hair ties to thank.

"We had our lucky ribbons on us, these yellow and blue ribbons that we're supposed to wear in our hair; that was probably the most important thing today. We've had them in several relays this year, and they've gone well," Gestblom says.

Norway took bronze, 16 seconds behind Sweden.
