The Association of Investigative Journalists' Golden Shovels for the best investigative journalism in eight categories were awarded in Borlänge on Saturday evening during this year's Gräv conference.
One of the winners was TV4's "Cold Facts" and the documentary "Undercover in the Troll Factory", where reporter Daniel Andersson went undercover as an employee at the Sweden Democrats' communications department. The documentary revealed that the Sweden Democrats operate anonymous social media accounts spreading hate speech.
The revelation earned the Golden Shovel with the nomination: "For daring and creative methods that exposed a troll factory that cannot be denied."
Upsala Nya Tidning's reporters Elin Sandow and Niklas Skeri received the Golden Shovel in the category of smaller daily newspaper for their expose "Rapes in Home Care".
The jury's motivation reads: "For exposing how a municipality ignored alarms and warning signals, thereby putting the elderly at risk of becoming victims of sexual assaults."
Before this year's award, around 230 entries had been submitted for review by the nine-member jury. The number of entries has never been higher.
Nearly 100 of the submitted entries were published by editorial teams that primarily produce local journalism.
"Tough, as always. Very many of the investigations we were forced to reject would also be worthy of an award", says the jury's convenor Kicki Hultin in a statement on the association's website.
