The so-called quantity discount was a hotly contested issue during the election campaign. Now the dispute is flaring up again in the Justice Committee.

SD is today presenting a proposal for a committee initiative, which would urge the government to decide to abolish the quantity discount on January 1, 2029.

The Riksdag decided this summer that the quantity discount should be abolished, but gave the government the mandate to decide when.

The red-green parties opposed the proposal.

After the election, however, the red-greens have a majority in both the committees and the Riksdag as a whole.

In the short term, the Social Democrats want to abolish the quantity discount only for sexual offenses, and S leader Magdalena Andersson promised during the election campaign that this would happen in 2027.

S has warned that there will not be enough prison places if the quantity discount is abolished for all crimes. Justice Committee Chair Teresa Carvalho (S) has pointed to a new report from the Swedish Prison and Probation Service indicating that the need for more prison places is greater than thought in the spring.

Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer (M) will come to the committee today to brief it on the need for prison places. Strömmer has accused S of now trying to undermine the reforms so that it will not have to implement them if it succeeds in forming a new S-led government.
