The Sweden Democrats' top candidate in Sölvesborg is pouting after making controversial statements about Ukraine and Russia.

In January 2022, Emilie Pilthammar wrote that “the Russians might have been a better solution than the regime we have now” and that Putin and Zelensky are “plague or cholera.”

Pilthammar then claimed that Expressen, which reported on the matter, took words and sentences out of context.

Now she is apologizing on her blog, the newspaper reports. She writes that municipal politicians perhaps should not write about world affairs from their own perspective, as it is not always "correct based on the exact truth".

"No one wants any controlled referendums from Russia. Neither do I. If what I have written has been interpreted that way, then I have expressed it in the wrong way and I apologize for that."
